Lord Shiva is worshipped here as Mallikarjuna, while Goddess Parvati is worshipped as Bhramaramba Devi, making this temple unique as both a Jyotirlinga and a Shakti Peetha.
The divine energy of this sacred shrine attracts pilgrims seeking blessings, peace, and spiritual upliftment. Devotees believe that offering prayers at Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga removes past karmas and grants spiritual enlightenment. The temple is revered as one of the most powerful centers of devotion in South India, where Shiva and Shakti bless devotees together with compassion and divine grace.
History of Mallikārjuna Jyotirlinga
The history of Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga dates back to ancient times and is mentioned in sacred texts such as the Shiva Purana and other Hindu scriptures. The temple is believed to have existed for thousands of years and has been worshipped by saints, kings, and devotees throughout history.
Several dynasties including the Satavahanas, Chalukyas, and Vijayanagara rulers contributed to the development and preservation of this holy temple. Over centuries, the temple became an important spiritual center for Shaivism and Shaktism traditions. Today, it stands as a symbol of India’s rich spiritual heritage and continues to inspire millions of devotees.
The Legend of Mallikārjuna Jyotirlinga
According to ancient legend, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati once decided to find brides for their sons, Ganesha and Kartikeya. A challenge was given: whoever circled the world first would be married first. While Kartikeya traveled around the world, Ganesha simply circled his parents, believing that they represented the entire universe.
Pleased by his wisdom, Shiva and Parvati declared Ganesha the winner. Kartikeya felt hurt and went to live in solitude on a nearby mountain. To console him, Shiva and Parvati followed and stayed nearby in the form of Mallika (Parvati) and Arjuna (Shiva). Thus the sacred place came to be known as Mallikarjuna, and the temple was established at Srisailam.
Spiritual Significance of Mallikārjuna Jyotirlinga
Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga holds immense spiritual importance in Hindu tradition. It is one of the rare temples where Jyotirlinga and Shakti Peetha exist together, symbolizing the divine union of Shiva and Shakti.
Pilgrims believe that visiting this sacred shrine and performing Abhishekam to the Jyotirlinga can cleanse sins and grant liberation (moksha). Many devotees undertake the Dwadasha Jyotirlinga Yatra, and Mallikarjuna is considered one of the most powerful stops on this sacred pilgrimage. The temple is especially vibrant during festivals such as Maha Shivaratri and Karthika Masam, when thousands gather to worship Lord Shiva.
