The Legend of Bhīmaśaṅkara Jyotirlinga
According to ancient legends described in the Shiva Purana, a powerful demon named Bhimasura, the son of Kumbhakarna, performed severe penance and gained immense strength. With his newfound power, he began tormenting sages, devotees, and innocent people.
Unable to bear the suffering, the gods and devotees prayed to Lord Shiva for protection. Responding to their prayers, Lord Shiva appeared in a fierce form and battled the demon Bhimasura. After a powerful battle, Lord Shiva destroyed the demon and restored peace in the world. It is believed that after this divine victory, Lord Shiva manifested himself as a Jyotirlinga, which came to be known as Bhimashankar.
