According to tradition, after the Kurukshetra war, the Pandavas sought forgiveness from Lord Shiva for the sins committed during the war. They traveled to the Himalayas to perform penance and seek the Lord’s blessings.
It is believed that the original temple was built by the Pandavas, and later revived by the great philosopher and saint Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century. The Legend of Kedāranātha Jyotirlinga
According to ancient legend, after the Mahabharata war the Pandavas wanted to absolve themselves of their sins. They prayed to Lord Shiva, but the Lord wished to avoid them and disguised himself as a bull. When the Pandavas recognized him, Shiva attempted to disappear into the ground.
During this moment, Bhima caught the bull, and the hump of the bull appeared at Kedarnath, forming the sacred Jyotirlinga. Other parts of the divine bull appeared in nearby locations, which became the famous Panch Kedar temples. This miraculous manifestation made Kedarnath one of the holiest places for Shiva devotees.
